town. >> reporter: hey, good afternoon. that's right. and we're here at america's cup village with a bunch of tents set up by marina green. if you are a sailor, this is the place to be as well as if you're a bluegrass music love or an italian food lover and, of course, one of the biggest draws is going to be fleet week going on this weekend. yes, there is a little bit of something for everyone. so we actually got a little head started and we got to hop on board the uss macon island a navy assault ship here for fleet week. you may have seen it docked in the bay. it's offering tours this weekend, lots of different aircraft on board. it has a mobile surgical center so it could be called in to help san francisco if there was ever an earthquake or other disaster. >> ships like this responded to hurricane katrina in new orleans and ships like this responded to haiti following

the earthquake down there. >> reporter: here's a map of what else is going on. we have hardly strictly bluegrass, at golden gate park. giants games, 49ers, the castro street fair, italian heritage parade, that's in north beach, and even more going on outside the city like florence & the machine in mountain view and madonna happens to be performing in san jose. san francisco's police chief talked about the exceptionally busy weekend today on our morning show. >> you know, we have just about every san francisco police officer working and god bless them. they know how big an event it is. we got little to no complaints. poa is direction. they will be out here keeping everybody safe. >> reporter: now, this shouldn't be a big shocker but officials are asking people not to drive even once you get here. parking really is expected to be a nightmare. so use mass transit, bart, ferries, muni all ramping up service beginning tonight. so this area right around marina green is expected to be one of the hot spots.

we have america's cup, the blue angels viewing, sailboat racing continues through sunday. we talked to america's cup organizers who say they are happy to be sharing the spotlight. >> so there's a lot of action down here on marina green and i think we're going to have hundreds of thousands of people between the show in the sky and the show on the water. it's going to be a great weekend. >> reporter: we have heard this called carmageddon san francisco, a little dramatic but they are expecting about a million people to land here, extra people, to be here in san francisco. so that's a lot. back to you. >> that is a lot. elizabeth, thank you. and we're following some breaking news right now. you may want to stay away from the 880/237 interchange in milpitas. the eastbound-to-southbound connector is closed now following a fatal crash. it happened just however an

hour ago when southbound cars slammed into a railing near the great mall parkway. the car then burst into flames killing that driver. chp says no other vehicles were involved. it's unclear why the driver lost control. a california man who recently died overseas has triggered an international health scare. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran explains it all traces back to a sick bat in the east bay and a deadly disease that hasn't been seen around here for years. >> reporter: it's the county's first death from rains business rabies. >> it's rare. >> reporter: a 34-year-old contra costa county man died from the disease in switzerland in july. once the cdc found out an investigation started. >> four people we identified may have had contact with his saliva or other bodily fluids. three of those did and we offered post-exposure

prophylaxis and they received injections. >> reporter: and investigators discovered four months before he died the man came in contact with a mexican bat in southern contra costa county and didn't report it to health officials. >> rabies, the key is if you have been exposed to a wild animal if you are concerned about having saliva contact or being bitten by a wild animal, seek medical attention immediately. >> reporter: the cdc says, though, the majority of bats have no risk of rabies. most human rabies infections in the u.s. come from exposure to the animal. >> bats are the principal species or group of animals in which we see rabies each year. between 1,000 and 2,000 bats are tested each year in california for rabies. and between -- up to 200 bats are found positive each year. >> reporter: in contra costa county, health leaders say one to 10 bats tests positive for the disease each year and in is a reminder to stay away from wildlife and report any contact

you have th tse animals. >> we can see from the taxidermy back here that they are small. some people may think that they're cute. some people may be rested in touching wildlife that will allow them to touch it. but we would recommend never touching a bat no matter what the circumstances are. >> reporter: health officials say the most recent rabies death in california was a santa barbara resident exposed to the virus in mexico. in martinez, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >> that man by the way made several international flights weeks before he died: cdc has identified nearly 5 dozen people who came in contact wit him. 23 were treated as a precaution. a rude awakening for bay area drivers. jaw-dropping numbers at the gas pumps this morning after prices spiked by nearly 20 cents overnight. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec on what's fueling the surge. >> we use a lot of fuel. >> reporter: the bus driver for the cupertino school district

-- >> we have to cut drivers or routes or whatever. so it does affect us very much. >> reporter: lately, filling up is stressing her out. >> well, we're thinking do we have jobs? you know? sometimes that relates to that. but i think it affects everybody in our community. >> reporter: prices have jumped an average of 37 cents in the bay area since last friday. the average in san francisco almost 4.60 for a gallon of regular. san jose, 4.54. and oakland, 5.42. >> it's just cuts down on your savings. >> reporter: in california, gas inventories are at the lowest levels in more than 10 years. >> i'm not quite sure why it's happening actually. >> reporter: a power surge knocked this refinery in torrence offline. conocophillips refinery says both ends of the state -- at both ends of the state are having maintenance. another is shut down because of

safety problems. and the chevron richmond refinery hasn't recovered from the fire in august. the short supply is worse because of the strict pollution limits requiring a special blend of gas. >> when you can go one or two counties over it's 25 cents cheaper i don't buy it at all. >> reporter: aaa says it depends on the location and the overhead costs of the station as well as when an owner bought a particular supply. aaa also says this price spike is only a short term trend but drivers want off of the roller coaster. >> i hope we find some other way to get our oil. >> reporter: to find the cheapest gas prices in your neighborhood, go to our website, cbssf.com/gas. in cupertino, anne makovec, cbs 5. it's not just gas prices on the rise. stocks are up today on word that the u.s. jobless rate dipped below 8% for the first time in nearly four years. this is a live look at the big board right now and you can see the dow is up about 9 points. that could give president obama

a bump too but cbs reporter tara mergener shows us his republican rival is not impressed. >> reporter: john keenan is repairing bikes these days. not in montana, where he owns a farm with his wife, but in springfield, virginia. >> i moved back in with my parents the same house i grew up in. >> reporter: he left behind breathtaking vistas and his cashmere sheep because jobs are more plentiful on the east coast. >> the scenery is awesome. everybody wants to move there. but you can't eat the scenery. >> reporter: the latest job numbers suggest more of the same for people like keenan, 114,000 jobs were added last month less than in august or july. but the all-important unemployment rate fell to 7.8% the lowest since president obama took office. officials at the white house say there is still more work to be done on the jobs front but insists the latest report is proof the economy is headed in the right direction. >> today's news certainly is not an excuse to try to talk

down the economy to score a few political points. it's a reminder that this country has come too far to turn back now. >> reporter: campaigning in virginia, gop white house hopeful mitt romney dismissed the unemployment rate falling below 8%. >> the reason it's come down this year is primarily due to the fact that more and more people have just stopped looking for work. >> reporter: economists say unemployment fell in part because more people have landed part-time work. that's what keenan han does. >> if i can get six months ahead, i can go back to montana. >> reporter: there is one more jobs report before election day. tara mergener, cbs news, the white house. a moraga teen's quest to become an eagle scout is over since he told family, friends and a boy scouts counselor that he is gay. ryan is a high school senior who completed his final project just last month. it was an anti-bullying wall he

helped kids create at his old middle school in moraga but his troop won't sign off on his eagle badge. >> this was an opportunity for our students to participate in the making of a permanent mural that would promote that idea of tolerance and acceptance for all our students. each tile has a different message about respecting all differences. it's a very positive message to promote. >> more than 150,000 people have signed an online petition urging the scouts not to deny ryan his eag al ward. boy scouts of america released a statement that says "he does not agree to scouting's principles of duty to god and does not meet scouting's membership standard on sexual orientation." coming up, military wives raising awareness about ptsd. their unusual strategy that's gone viral on facebook. >> and watch out for these guys. wild turkeys in the bay area.

dog story out of. san jose a stranger answered a little girl's prayers and brought her puppy home. >> 10-year-old marisa was reunited with her dog yesterday. burglars stole the dog monday. marisa offered up the contents of her piggy bank as a reward and a woman finally spotted the dog in a target parking lot 100 miles away and brought it back to her. >> i'm just happy that he is safe and back in our family. he is going to be safe no matter what now. >> san jose police and firefighters and a city council member upped the reward to $6,000. the woman said she will take that money now and buy her kids a dog because they got attached to that little guy right there. >> i know. that's meeko, isn't he commute? >> you can buy a lot of dogs with six grand. >> no kidding. and some food to go along with it. >> we got a big weekend ahead. >> there are a lot of events going on around the bay area. the weather is change. you have seen the clouds and

cooler temperatures the last couple of days. we'll continue to cool down, a weak system coming into the bay area now so a lot of clouds over the bay. temperatures now just beginning to heat up. it's 71 in concord, 7 2 livermore, 65 san francisco, 70 san jose. i think as we head toward the afternoon, we'll see cloudy skies but a nice afternoon with some mild temperatures showing up in many spots. tonight low clouds likely to return and then the weekend going to stay fairly cool. here's your system sliding its way toward the bay area. of course, high pressure moving out of the way with the low off the coast and a couple of clouds moving in our direction. we'll see those clouds on and off throughout the weekend but the big deal will be the cooler temperatures. these numbers running well below average for this time of year and will continue to roll on through. now, low pressure is going to track toward the coast toward monday and then there's a chance we could see a few showers. temperatures not bad around the bay area today. just much cooler than normal. about 71 in san jose. 57 in morgan hill.

67 degrees in union city. about 64 in pacifica. east bay temperatures where just a few days ago we had triple digits. only in the mid-70s on the warm end and just inside the bay you will find numbers running into the 60s, cool into daly city with that sea breeze, about 62 degrees. next couple of days we'll keep the temperatures down. in fact here come the clouds rolling in monday. doesn't look like a real big storm system but chances of showers and we'll dry out on tuesday and wednesday and, of course, we have fleet week. good news, the clouds will mix out so we'll be able to see the blue angels. >> cold on the bay. >> have you ever seen a wild turkey. >> i have. apparently there's a problem with them in the east bay. hundreds have invaded hercules. they are everywhere running through the streets destroying gardens and you saw the rooftops there. some of them are actually attack people. >> yes, they were having eggs, you know, babies and stuff and then one of the guys got attacked on the back of the

neck so we got the chair and started, you know, hitting them. >> reporter: you started hitting the turkeys with the chair? >> because the guy was getting hit, so yes. >> they are feisty! hercules city website is warning people not to feed the turkeys and if they get too close, you might want to try to hit them with an umbrella, i guess. >> i didn't know turkeys were mean. >> they are going to find out. i guess thanksgiving is a month and a half away? >> yes. six flags in vallejo unveiled something old. the discovery kingdom has a new dolphin 48 years old and comes from a zoo in minnesota. he is in good hands. six flags has cared for an older mammal before. 48 is considered older. a 51-year-old dolphin died last year. to give you an idea hold this one, dolphins in the wild only live up to the age of 12. so that's amazing. >> like four times. >> yeah. no kidding. >> check it out. the next top model for the
